(Day 3) Color Theory- Part 1- Individual Colors and their Psychological Effect

 Hi everyone! Today I will be discussing colors! On this blog, I will go through the first part, which is each color's meaning and effect on film and media. The research on this topic is a lot, so it's better to divide it!

Warm hues

Red


- energy, passion, power, excitement
- Danger, war, blood, fire, energy
- Stimulates faster heartbeat and breathing

-color of love, sexy connotation
- Appetite stimulant
For example, on this image, Lightning McQueen, a character from the movie sequel Cars is red. He is very intense and likes the danger of his runs. He is very energetic and powerful. He is also a "charming" character in the movie.


Orange

- Happy, confident, creative, adventurous.
Again, in the image of Lightning McQueen, the background elements are orange and yellow. The orange creates an adventurous atmosphere with a positive connotation.


Yellow

- Wisdom, playful, satisfying, optimistic, vitality
- light yellows appear drab on screen
- Bright yellows can be overpowering on screen.
- Most difficult color for eyes to take in
- Also Enhances appetite.
Yellow is also present in the image, as it enhances the playful aspect of Lightning McQueen's ride.

Cool hues

Green

Health, regeneration, contentment, harmony, wholesomeness
- Dark green associated with finance


In this image from The Lorax, one of the main characters is dressed in a green suit while singing about how much money he makes. The green association with finance is evident by the piles of cash behind him. 


- Lime greens associated with freshness, health, vibrancy
- Green=go (transportation, movement, progress).
- Easiest color for the eye
- Some claim that green has healing power
- Symbolizes nature, fertility, ecology and environmental awareness. 




In this scene from Moana, we can see that the main characters are having an interaction with mother nature. This relates to the freshness, health, vibrancy, healing power, nature, fertility ecology and environmental awareness of the color green.


Blue

- can be an indicative for honesty, trustworthiness, integrity, peacefulness and loyalty
- can also mean "feeling blue"- sadness, depression, negativity, bad omen. 




This is a poster from Pixar's Inside Out. It shows the human form of sadness, and the color blue transmits that.

Purple

Mystic, beauty, inspiration.
- wealth, royalty, prestige
- with males commonly connected with sexual endeavors
- 75% of adolescent females rate purple their favorite color.



This is an image for a poster for the new version of Disney's Alladin. The mystical lamp is shown surrounded by purple smoke.


Tint

Pink

- Tranquilizing, comforting, femininity. Color used in rooms to induce calmness.




Mean Girls- femininity shown through pink

Neutrals

Great for adding stability

Black

prestige
- power (usually evil)
- submission
- overly used-negative connotation.


Darth Vader, the villain from Star Wars.

White

innocence
- purity
- sterility
- angelic/ heavenly
